Winter Rose

Review # 34
Title: Winter Rose
Author: Patricia McKillip
Paperback, 262 pages
Published May 1997

This is the last book I'm reading for the month of August.

Rois and Laurel are two very different sisters. The story follows Rois, the wild girl who feels at home outdoors. Both girls become fascinated with a man named Corbet.

Corbet Lynn is a young man who has come to claim his inheritance, the Lynn hall. He soon charms the town, mostly by his hiring of the workers to help rebuild the home. However there are also rumors of the curse that Niall left his son with (Corbet's father) as he died. It was suspected that Corbet's father killed Niall and ran off though it could never be proved.

Soon, Rois becomes tangled in enchantments and mystery as she seeks to rescue the man she and her sister both love.

The book has this fantastic drama, which could make it almost realistic fiction but McKillip throws in fey mythology. The woods are truly a home the the fey and Corbet may have returned from that other world, not simply another city.

It is an exciting and engaging novel. Rois is a pleasure to read and the romance between Rois, Corbet, and Rois's sister Laurel adds a great twist.

My rating for WInter Rose: 3 bookmarks :)

But a lot of things had to happen before I married Andy and after that letter from Margot arrived in the mail. A lot of things.

And one of them was Leo. The one I would love before I loved Andy. The one I would grow to hate, but still love, long after we broke up. The one I would finally, finally get over..

Musing Mondays

This week’s musing is a book meme, hosted by Miz B of Should Be Reading! Wow, these are a lot of question! I just hope I could answer all of them... Here we go..

What was the last book you…
• borrowed from the library?
• bought?
• cried over?
• disliked and couldn’t finish?
• read & loved?
• got for review? (or: got in the mail?)
• gave to someone else?
• stayed up too late reading?

My answers…
What was the last book you…

• borrowed from the library? i think it was “Wuthering Heights" which I learned was the only novel by Emily Brontë.

• bought? “Careful What You Wish For" by Lucy Finn - I wanna have my own genie in a bottle, baby!

• cried over? "Vive La Paris" by Esme Raji Codell - very touching story about being a brother's keeper!!

• disliked and couldn’t finish? Love's Choices by Penny Jordan - my gosh, i got bored after reading the first chapter :(

• read & loved? “Inkheart” by Cornelia Funke - a classic!

• got for review? (or: got in the mail?)  - none so far

• gave to someone else? “Would You” by Marthe Jocelyn & "Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Decked Out" by Neta Jackson  — I gave both to my friend, Marina

• stayed up too late reading? “Red Blooded Murder” by Laura Caldwell - i never thought being a lawyer was soooo cool, hahaha!

BTT: National Book Week

I've done this 3 days ago here on my blog, but just for the fun of it, I'm doing another National Book Week meme for the other book I'm reading this week.

By the way, I also want to take part of this week's Booking Through Thursday so I guess it's okay to do Page 56!

Booking Through Thursday is a fun weekly question and answer session, based on books, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. This week there isn't a question but a fun bookish activity in honor of National Book Week.

Grab the closest book to you. Go to page 56. Copy the 5th sentence as your status.
Or in this case, "Copy the 5th sentence as your post".. Here's mine:

"You need to get out, young man!"

page 56

This is fun :) Thanks Kots Jello for sharing :)

It's National Book Week. The rule: Grab the closest book to you, go to page 56, copy as your status sentence number 5. Don't mention the book.

"I hope he was in my class."

my fave lines...

And Nicola, who'd been kissed before only by a god, realized that being kissed by a mortal was a great deal more satisfying, because he seemed really to mean it.
Or maybe it was only because this time she was being kissed by a man she truly loved, and whose friendship she valued above all others. . . .
In any case, being kissed by Nathaniel Sheridan, even on the back of a horse in the middle of a public street, was quite the most exciting thing that had ever happened to Nicola.
At least until Nathaniel lifted his head to say, in a raw voice, "Nicky, I love you so," and then proceeded to kiss her even more deeply.
