hello 2013

2012 has been a fruitful year for me. I received a lot of blessings and love from people around me and from people who hardly knew me.

This year, I intend to make it more fruitful and blessed by being more attentive to everyone's needs, especially to my family. I really hope I can achieve this goal this year, among other resolutions.

Hello 2013. Cheers to the wonderful year ahead!!!

Centaur Legacy

And here's my last book review for the year. Save the best for last :)

Title: Centaur Legacy (Touched #2)
Author: Nancy Straight
Kindle / ebook
Published November 22nd 2012

Camille and Drake are on the run from the head of the Centaur Council, seeking the mythical pasture of Thessaly and a family heirloom that may keep them safe. As their journey progresses from the rolling hills of Ireland to the snow covered forests of South Dakota, Cami learns more about her mother’s secrets, including a twin brother and a Centaur legacy that puts a death warrant on her entire family.
Camille and Drake don't know who to trust or where to hide. Camille’s family is quick to come to her aid, but who among them can be trusted?
Cheers to another great masterpiece from one of the best storytellers of our time. Yippee!!

The story about the Centauride Camille continues as she and her betrothed, Drake, embark on a quest in the mystical Ireland.  As they search for her elusive uncle and the arrow touched by a powerful god, Camille came to know more about her long-lost twin brother and her family's legacy.

I liked that Nancy Straight have expanded more on the other characters such as Drake's and Beau and Daniel. OMG, I was kinda surprised with Daniel. He had his funny moments in Book 1 but here in Book 2, he was a little arrogant and possessive, but that's what made him more adorable. And Zandra.. Let's not talk about Zandra. I might just kill her.. LOL.

But Drake's transformation?? That was what caught me off-guard. Kudos to Nancy, you never fail to surprise me :)

Once again, I am grateful for this wonderful opportunity to read Nancy Straight's Centaur Legacy. This is by far her best book and I know her next would be as great. Hope to read her latest novel soon!!!

Happy Holidays everyone! :)

Deadwood Mysteries

Title: Nearly Departed in Deadwood
(Deadwood Mysteries #1)
Author: Ann Charles

Deadwood Mysteries
from my new favorite author - Ann Charles

After reading the first few chapters of Nearly Departed in Deadwood, I knew I was hooked. I was immediately drawn to Violet Parker who is a funky, fierce and lovable character. All throughout the series (Nearly Departed in Deadwood #1, Optical Delusions in Deadwood # 2, Dead Case in Deadwood # 3)

A single mom with two adorable kids, Violet Parker is a determined woman who would do anything to keep her job on real estate, even if she has to face her ass of an office-mate every single day. Fortunately, there's a string of men who would gladly buy or sell their houses through her: Old Man Harvey, Doc Nyce, Jeff Wymonds, Wolfgang Hessler, Detective Cooper  and an Abraham Lincoln look-alike.. Of course, there are also those creepy villainous characters, such as her despicable co-worker Ray Underhill. Top it up with ghost-hunters, chicken feeders, haunted houses,  weird home-owners, adorable  naughty kids, peeping-tom neighbor, and gorgeous BFF who also have the hots for her boyfriend, you've got three hilariously awesome Deadwood mysteries you'd surely love to uncover. Like the case of missing girls, the haunted house which has a long history of murders, and a funeral parlor that moves crates which may  be containing chopped body parts... uh-oh!!!

Ann Charles is indeed an exceptional talent. Her stories make me want to go to the nearest bookstore and grab all her other works (I have yet to try the Jackrabbit Junction mysteries). She's now part of the list of my favorite authors of 2012. Yay!

I can't really wait for the 4th book. Now that her Calamity Jane boss was found dead and her BFF Natalie already knew about Violet & Doc's steamy secret relationship, what would happen next to Violet's career & family? Well, I guess I have to find out SOON.

Ethereal

Title: Ethereal (Celestra Series # 1)
Author: Addison Moore
Kindle Edition; 162 pages
Published March 2011

Sixteen-year-old, Skyla Messenger is a dead girl walking.
When her newly remarried mother moves the family to Paragon Island, to a house that is rumored to be haunted, Skyla finds refuge in Logan Oliver, a boy who shares her unique ability to read minds.
Skyla discovers Logan holds the answers to the questions she’s been looking for, but Logan’s reluctance to give her the knowledge she desires leaves her believing Logan has a few secrets of his own.
Skyla’s bloodlines may just be connected to the most powerful angelic beings that roam the earth, and the more she knows, the more danger she seems to be in.
Suddenly an entire faction of earthbound angels wants her dead, at least she still has Logan, or does she?

oh angels! It's been a long time since I last read a book about angels. So I was kinda ecstatic to learn that Skyla was one of the Celestrals which is the highest and purest rank among earth angels. What's cool is she could also read minds, much to the chagrin of her mom and stepdad. Although her relationship with her family is strained, she found new friends who were willing to help her.

Anyway, there are also these two angelic beings - Logan and Gage, which I am having a hard time choosing (for Skyla's benefit, of course). One time, I was on team Logan. But when I got to read more, I was definitely rooting for Gage.

One thing that I kind of disliked: Skyla's name. Everytime I read her name, Skyla, it just reminded me of this cartoon series in the 90's (The Sky Dancers - featuring 5 flying students of High Hope Academy under the stewardship of Queen Skyla).. Ha ha ha.. If you don't know what I am talking about, just Google it. It might even tell you how old I am.. oops!

Okay, just to inform you, Ethereal is a good read. I recommend this to YA Fantasy readers and angel lovers. It was quite enjoyable, really. I'd love to read book 2 immediately so I know how the story commences. Overall, my rating for this Addison Moore bestseller: 4 stars!

the phenomenal loss

Time and time again, it has been proven that boxing is a game. You win some, you lose some. You will not always be the winner. You also have to lose and accept defeat.

Today, the most celebrated boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao lost his 4th match with Juan Manuel Marquez. Via technical knockout. At 6th round. All I can say is... It was Phenomenal.

Yes, I was stunned when I read the tweets of my friends.. ( I wasn't able to watch the Live Streaming so I settled with Twitter. Man, oh Man.. Boy was I really shocked!

That deadly punch JMM delivered ended the controversial battle between these 2 matadors. The world has gone crazy. A lot of people blame Manny's lack of training due to his political career. Others blame his religion.

What the fcuk people??

Pacquiao won 8 world titles.. Manny had given a lot for his countrymen. He made us all proud not once, not twice, not thrice but 8 times! I really don't care now how much more fights he loses .. For me, he is still the best boxing champ in the world. And after he admitted defeat, all I have is my respect for him.

I am a Filipino.. and I am still proud of Pacquiao!

Mabuhay ka Manny!

And I just want to quote what the famous Bob Ong tweeted: "Keep your head up Pacquiao. I know you gave all your best! You're still our champion!" #FilipinoPride

The girl came out of the barn. She had dark hair like the hippie woman, so he figured it had to be Lil. She wore jeans rolled up at the cuffs, and high-top sneakers, and a red baseball cap over the hair done in two long braids.
She looked scruffy and stupid, and he immediately disliked her.

I realize too late that people's definition of "early" on a Sunday morning differ wildly. Ten o'clock was my guess for how early I would need to be ready for Roman's birthday surprise. It turns out that he meant more like six o'clock!!

Cassidy Jones Adventures

Title:
Cassidy Jones and the Secret Formula (Cassidy Jones Adventures # 1)
Author: Elise Stokes
Kindle Edition

Fourteen-year-old Cassidy Jones wakes up the morning after a minor accident in the laboratory of a world-renowned geneticist to discover that her body has undergone some bizarre physical changes. Her senses, strength, and speed have been radically enhanced.
After exploring her newfound abilities, Cassidy learns that the geneticist, Professor Serena Phillips, is missing and that foul play is suspected. Terrified that her physical changes and Professor Phillips' disappearance are somehow connected, Cassidy decides to keep her strange transformation a secret. That is, until she meets the professor's brilliant and mysterious fifteen-year-old son, Emery. An unlikely duo, they set out to find Emery's mother, who is key in explaining Cassidy's newly acquired superpowers.
Their lives are put at risk when they find themselves embroiled in a dangerous, action-packed adventure. Soon they are forced to confront a maniacal villain willing to do anything - including murder — to reach his own ambitious goals.

This is one great-action packed novel, definitely a must read! True, I am waaaaay past my teenage years, but reading YA novels like this Cassidy Jones series helps me feel good and young all over again.

Cassidy Jones, with her flaming red hair and newly acquired super powers PLUS a good-looking super genius sidekick named Emery, is a force to be reckoned with. How did she become Super? Let's just say she was just at the wrong place at the wrong time - but the result came out right. When I envision Cassidy, I actually see a female Wolverine (for her animalistic instincts), Wonderwoman (for her strength & stealth) and Kid Flash (for her superspeed) all rolled into one. She's got the guts, the character and the drive to make sure that her family is out of harm's way and will do everything for her adorable kid brother Chazz.

And what's up with Emery? Seriously, I'd love to meet someone like him - super genius and handsome and loyal - what more can a 14-year-old ask?? Well, when i was in my teens, I definitely wanted to have a boyfriend like Emery; sadly, Cassidy and I are not on the same wavelength.. sheesh!

I admire the author - Elise Stokes because she is very imaginative with her characters, giving each of them depth and likeable qualities. I see a future romantic atmosphere between Cassidy and Emery, but Cass is still holding a torch for Jared, so let's just wait and see.

I'd love to go on and on and on, but the wonderful words of praise will only mean one thing - Cassidy Jones is a great superheroine that I surely love. I'm hoping a TV executive would pick up this novel to become a tv series - for sure, Cassidy Jones Adventures would be a HIT!

By the way - I ALSO LOVE Cassidy Jones And Vulcan's Gift! My favorite character in book 2? the Sasquatch :):):) Here's a summary for the second book:

An ancient secret has come to life, and everyone on the planet is at risk...
Two months after being infected with a strange retrovirus, Cassidy Jones continues to live a double life while she struggles to master her newly gained superpowers. High school has become the only normal thing left in her life—except for tall, dark, and handsome Emery Phillips, who shadows her every move, making sure she doesn’t reveal her secret.
Then an overnight sleepover at Catamount Mountain Zoo takes a menacing turn, putting everything at risk!

So there's some bad blood and bruised egos among the Metcalf sisters. At least they're reuniting. A cause to celebrate? Not for Justine, Regina, and Mica. Their parents are splitting up and the family business is going on the auction block--just a little reminder of how much they really have in common...

Take the local bad boy who proposed to Justine, seduced Regina, and ran off with Mica. Add the unsolved murder they witnessed when they were young girls, and their vow to keep it a secret. Toss in their knack for being drawn to shady men, and there's only one thing left for them to do--put the bonds of family loyalty to the test.

But it takes courage to outsmart a murderer, know-how to avenge the cad who betrayed them, and patience to bring their parent back together. Three talents. Three sisters. And who knows? Maybe even three new chances to fall in love when Justine, Regina, and Mica discover how much they're willing to risk--and forgive--in the name of sisterhood...

Entangled

Title: Entangled (Spellbound #1)
Author: Nikki Jefford
Kindle Edition; 303 pages
Published February 20th 2012

Two months after dying, seventeen-year-old witch Graylee Perez wakes up in her twin sister Charlene’s body.
Until Gray finds a way back inside her own body, she’s stuck being Charlene every twenty-hour hours. Her sister has left precise instructions on how Gray should dress and behave. Looking like a prep isn’t half as bad as hanging out with Charlene’s snotty friends and gropey boyfriend.
The “normals” of McKinley High might be quick to write her behavior off as post-traumatic stress, but warlock Raj McKenna is the only person who suspects Gray has returned from the dead.
Now Gray has to solve the mystery of her death and resurrection and disentangle herself from Charlene’s body before she disappears for good.

I got this book immediately after the finale of The Secret Circle was aired on TV. I have this thing for witches, warlocks and the sorts, that's why I was kind of sad when The CW network announced that The Secret Circle was cancelled. Good thing, a friend of mine suggested Entangled, where I could enjoy reading about witches and bitches. And bad boys too! Oh Boy! I was spellbound!

Get this... Twin sisters; both are witches, GrayLee and Charlene, total opposites -  the other wanted to jump off from the roof but flew; the other died mysteriously because of SUDS (Sudden Death Syndrome)...

The other girl resurrected but had to be alive every other day - using her other twin's body.. Freaky right? It was and it was full of twists! Twin life has never been this so much.... entangled!

OKay, so it was like a battle of the good twin versus the bad twin. Only they could communicate with each other through letters. Because they cannot see each other, they are unable to slap each other.. Ha ha ha.. Their friends and boys are mystified with their behavior, especially since the other one was supposed to be dead. I love how the author Nikki Jefford build Gray's character. But I would want to know what goes inside Charlene's minds when she did those dark magical stuffs.. I want to understand why she had to resort to doing those crazy spells and incantations - what.. just because of a boy who gropes her butt whenever he has the chance? Ugh! I wanna punch Blake in the face whenever he did that.. Double Ugh!

Anyway, before I get carried away, I am making sure that by September I'm gonna read Book 2 of the Spellbound series, entitled Duplicity. I learned that Graylee finally got her own body - not one but two! OMG!!!

This series is much better than The Secret Circle. Kudos to Nikki Jefford for creating this one-of-a-kind spellbinding tale. Can't wait to read more! :)

I'm awarding 4 (stars) bookmarks for Entangled.. Well deserved :)

Blood Debt

Title: Blood Debt
(Touched series # 1)
Author: Nancy Straight
Kindle Edition; 304 pages
Published July 2012

Her whole life, it had just been the two of them. Before her mother’s last breath, she gave Camille the information she had craved her entire life: the identity of her father. Daring to contact him, Camille was welcomed by an entire family she never knew existed. But nothing comes without a price, as she discovers when her family claims a legendary heritage tracing back to a centaur touched by Zeus.

As she learns the secrets of her Centaur bloodline, she is drawn into a forbidden love with Drake. Her life may be the blood debt required to pay for her mother’s transgressions. The same person who once held her mother captive, and forced her into decades of hiding, now controls Camille. Her only chance is to seek a piece of her mother’s past that will win her freedom and the life she desperately wants.

Let me just say that I absolutely love this book!

When Nancy Straight first announced on Goodreads that she was having a contest for the title of her series about a bloodline that goes way back to the time of Zeus, I was excited.

At first I was thinking of the title The Centaur Bloodline, but I felt like, the title might already reveal the mystery of the story, so  I agreed with the others that Blood Debt would be a perfect title. To me, it sounded mysterious enough :)

Truth is, I haven't read any book touching a topic about centaurs (well, except for the Percy Jackson series but that was a children's book and centaurs there were of the minority) so I was ecstatic about Straight's concept that I made sure of getting the book once it got released on amazon. And of course, I was not disappointed. I couldn't put the book down! It's definitely a page-turner!

The story began with Camille and her dying mom where she learned about her long lost father ten minutes before her mom's last breath. Cami soon embarked on a journey to finding her real father and found out that she actually have, not one, but five attractive brothers. I really enjoyed the characters especially the Strayer brothers and their strong kinship with their step sister Camille. When I noticed how they were more than willing to welcome her in their threshold, I got this strange feeling that something was up. And there's Gretchen, the family's matriarch who was so sweet and accepting;  and that's when I realized I didn't want to put my Kindle down until I finished the story.

I thought I would hate Gage, the man who was supposed to be Cami's future husband, but I was wrong. I actually liked him. And there's mysterious Drake! Cami and Drake seems to belong with each other, but I cannot really say that they're gonna end up together because there's still a second book to watch out for. I would love to see Cami get her Centauride powers 'cause that would definitely be a kick!  I am also definitely intrigued with the other characters, like Gage and Bianca, Daniel and grandma Zandra and I am excited to read more about them and how they would fare on the sequel Blood Ties.

Once again, Nancy Straight created a masterpiece! I loved her previous series (The Destiny series) and I am sure that Touched would be a bestseller too.

My rating for Nancy Straight's Blood Debt: 4 bookmarks!!
