It’s Monday! What Are You Reading, is where we gather to share what we have read this past week and what we plan to read this week. It is a great way to network with other bloggers, see some wonderful blogs, and put new titles on your reading list.

This fantastic meme is now hosted by Sheila at One Person's Journey Through a World of Books
i'm sorry, i failed to join two weeks ago, been caught up with work and a lot of books lately. today, let me wrap up the books i've managed to feast my eyes on for the last three weeks.

Last January, I met three Wills.. For February - I met 3 KAT characters this time. Heroines who had the name "Kat"..

Like Ally Carter's Katarina Bishop in Heist Society.. very clever & feisty lady, if I must say..

And there's Caitlin McCourt aka Cathy in Alex Flinn's Diva.. an opera-aspiring singer with boyfriend issues.. i love her!

There's also Katniss from The Hunger Games Trilogy
Review for Hunger Games
Review for Catching Fire
Review for Mockingjay

Katniss + Gale + Peeta = one rollercoaster arena of love, survival and revenge. Definitely the best trilogy ever!

I've also read a series of children's book, the Spiderwick Chronicles - a fantasy book about faeries, goblins, trolls... something my kids loved!

There was also Meg Cabot's Ransom My Heart which was by the way, written by Princess Mia Thermopolis herself!

And this week, I'm reading the funnies!

Meet witty Alice in Susan Juby's I'm Alice (I Think)

and afterwards, i'll continue with my Princess Diaries - oh, why does it have to have 10 books, Meg Cabot? I'm done with the first 3 last month, so on with the next three.  (Mia Goes Fourth, Project Princess & Princess in Pink)

And i'm reading Beastly, too! Now a major motion picture starring Zac Efron's EX girlfriend and I Am Number Four lead star.. I'd rather read this first before i watch the film soon..

and there goes my Monday Wrap Up.. Till next week peeps :)

Spiderwick Chronicles

Review # 19
Title: The Spiderwick Chronicles
Books in Series:
1) The Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You
2) The Seeing Stone
3) Lucinda's Secret
4) The Ironwood Tree
5) The Wrath of Mulgarath

Author: by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi
Category: Children's Book

From The Barnes & Noble Review

Three curious kids discover a world of brownies, fairies, and other fantastic creatures in this ultra-enchanting launch to Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black's Spiderwick Chronicles.

When the three Grace children -- Mallory, Jared, and Simon -- and their mom move into Aunt Lucinda's old house, readers know there's magic afoot. The kids uncover a nest of assembled junk, and on a visit to the secret library via the dumbwaiter, Jared finds a note describing "my secret to all mankind." After a few mysterious pranks that get blamed on Jared, the boy finally digs up the real prize: Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You. Fortunately enough, the kids meet one of the critters listed in the guide -- a brownie named Thimbletack -- who makes it all "real" and helps provide the book's suspenseful conclusion: "'Throw the book away, toss it in a fire. If you do not heed, you will draw their ire.'"

I actually saw the movie first and my kids and enjoyed it, and so far the movie has somewhat came close to the book but of course, there are still alterations. Once upon a time, upon moving into the run-down Spiderwick Estate with their mother, twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace, along with their sister Mallory, find themselves pulled into an alternate world full of fairies and other creatures. Unable to explain the strange disappearances and accidents that seem to be happening on a daily basis, the family blames it all on Jared. When he, Simon and Mallory investigate what's really going on, they uncover the fantastic truth of the Spiderwick estate and of the creatures that inhabit it.

Creatures like Goblins, Griffyn, Trolls, Badgers, Boggarts, Faeries... the list is endless! truly magical and interesting read!
Overall, with the 5 book setting, the story is great and balanced for kids. I just don't get it why they had to divide the whole story into 5 when the story could have been printed on one book.. ha!

Michael and I are finally sitting together, but we are not making out yet, because Michael does not believe in public displays of affection, because, as he says, Some Things Are Private.
Which I fully understand and appreciate.I mean, it is not like I want him to go around Frenching me in the caf , or whatever.
But you know, holding hands wouldn’t hurt.

Mockingjay

Review # 18
Title: Mockingjay
Author: Suzanne Collins
Hardcover, 398 pages
Published August 2010

Young Katniss Everdeen has survived the dreaded Hunger Games not once, but twice, but even now she can find no relief. In fact, the dangers seem to be escalating: President Snow has declared an all-out war on Katniss, her family, her friends, and all the oppressed people of District 12. What does the Girl On Fire have to do?

Mockingjay picks up immediately after Katniss Everdeen – champion of the recently concluded Hunger Games before the total reclamation and destruction of the Quarter Quell, was brought to District 13 – the place most people thought had vanished & destroyed after the last rebellion.

After waking up in a pristine hospital and clad in an all-gray ensemble, with her daily schedule tattoed on her shoulder, Katniss was tagged as the Mockingjay, the sign of the new rebellion where the thought of an uprising among districts had took shape. Katniss processed all that has happened to her and all that may still come to pass so long as the Capitol still remains a threat. Beyond the love triangle, beyond the upcoming twists and turns, beyond even the fate of Panem itself -- what has happened to Katniss Everdeen. Where is the Girl on Fire?

At first I was really rooting for Gale too, but Peeta sort of grew on me. Damn that Peeta. Because while what happened with Katniss and Gale is totally unfair, and I feel ruins their trust and any sort of relationship they could have had, what happened to Peeta was unfair too, and I just have to root for him. Suzanne makes it easy to see how Peeta is a better person than Katniss.

Let's jump up to the end of the story.. Tragic, really.. In the end so far as I can tell after all that's happened, after all the death and loss the world still revolves around Katniss at least so far as Katniss is concerned. However,  I do believe Suzanne Collins made Mockingjay as a fitting, beautifully tragic end to a piercing series.

TST: Mockingjay

Third Sentence Thursday is a weekly meme for charging into the promote a third sentence fray!

Hosted by Sniffy Kitty's Mostly Books.. Here are her rules for the 3rd sentence review:

1) Take the book you are reading now and post the third sentence

2) Review this sentence anyway you want (funny and silly reviews encouraged)

3) Post a link to your sentence here or if you don't have a blog, just post it in the comments!

For this week, here's my third sentence from the third book of Hunger Games trilogy, MOCKINGJAY:
Over there was the kitchen table.

kinda senseless sentence, huh! The protagonist, Katniss, was actually describing her home, initially stating the room where she shares a bed witth her sister Prim; thus noting where there kitchen table happened to be.

Hopefully, next time, I'll be able to scrap a sentence with sense next week :) And that's my share for this week.. Have fun!

Catching Fire

 Review # 17
Title: Catching Fire
Author: Suzanne Collins
Hardcover, 391 pages
Published September 1st 2009

Catching Fire is the second installment of Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games. This story picks up about six months after the games have ended as Peeta and Katniss are about to be taken on a victory tour of the other districts. When Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mallark were crowned victors of the recently concluded Hunger Games, they thought everything else would be perfect. But they were wrong. As soon as they emerged as champions in the arena, President Snow of the Capitol have targeted Katniss because of her act of defiance on the Hunger Games. This pertains to the act of Katniss & Peeta willingly swallowing some poisonous berries after the Gamemakers announced that there should only one winner in the game. But since Peeta & Katniss don’t want to kill each other, they thought of rather dying so as no victor will emerge. This act angered the Gamemakers and President Snow because Katniss has made the capitol looked like fools and were very unhappy with her performance in the games and she comes to realize what a huge price she is going to have to pay for that.

And there's Peeta's public wedding proposal to Katniss, where she had to go along so as not to anger the Capitol further. Somehow, I feel the intensity of the love triangle on this book - Peeta, Katniss & Gale. I can see the developmental difference in Katniss, an older, wiser, more observant girl while still retaining that fire. I thought her confusion over Peeta and Gale well done and age appropriate. I could feel her emotion for both boys--her respect, camaraderie, in sync feelings with Gale and her protective, guilty, grateful feelings for Peeta--and why she could not give up or disappoint either one. I enjoyed learning more about Haymitch and seeing more of the danger Katniss' district faced for her unintended rebellion. In Hunger Games I felt intense concern for Katniss where here I felt it for her whole district. Of course, with a more dangerous story, there is definitely more gore. Once again, not appropriate for younger teens.

Although the entire concept is somewhat discturbing, The Hunger Games and Catching Fire are two of the most captivating books I've read recently. I can't wait to finish the next book - Mockingjay! I'm screaming for more and more! Collins has left her readers with a doozy of a cliffhanger. This had me thinking...  Will she be able to bring it together and pull it off triumphantly for the final installment?

Of course she had! So i better read and finish the series fast!

Hunger Games

Review # 16
Title: Hunger Games (Book 1)
Author: Suzanne Collins
Hardbound, 374 pages
Published October 1st 2008

I rarely cry over books, really! But the world of Hunger Games left me crying again and again. Katniss & Peeta – two brave warriors – two different heart-warming histories.

When I first heard about Hunger Games, I was hesitant to read it. I thought these was another one of those YA Reads that wanted to get hold of that Twilight pandemonium. But when I read the outstanding reviews and the fact that it has been a bestseller for a number of months, not just weeks, and then spawned up to three installments, I knew I had to read Hunger Games.

Exactly on my birthday, just two days ago (February 9), I started reading Suzanne Collins’ masterpiece. I got watery eyes after learning about poverty, struggles and sacrifices on District 12, especially about Katniss’ & Peeta’s families; the way they had met, the way they have been chosen for the dreaded Hunger Games, the way they had been paired up, they way they had survived.

Katniss is a very strong character – much different from the girl protagonists I previously read. At first, I couldn’t help but compare her with Katarina Bishop (Heist Society) and with Caitlin McCourt (Diva) who are all brave and bold. (Notice their names - Katniss, Kat & Caitlin – it looks like they belong to the same feline kingdom.)

But there is something about Katniss that made her stood out from the rest of heroines. She cares so much for her family, taking the place of Prim, her sister as a tribute so Prim would be spared from the bloodbath, she strives hard to survive, she steers clear of untrustworthy people, she knows how to keep her emotions in check, she thinks ahead and moves according to plan, even if she had to pretend being in-love – she’s all that, all in one piece..

Peeta, on the other hand, may somewhat be smitten with Katniss,as he does show & play on the arena. In his little way, he helps himself and Katniss survive against their competitors – the Career Tributes. He may not be as strong as Katniss but he did all his best to protect her, even getting a cut in the leg just to make her run away from the enemy.

The ending of the story is a cliffhanger, one that makes you think about what will happen next after the battle at the arena. I'm not recommending this book to everyone though. If you hate violence or dystopia, choose a more subtle book, because Hunger Games is definitely not for the faint-of-heart.

But for those who love this kind of genre, knock yourselves out. This is one of the ultimate must-reads because this book is simply AWESOME!!

Just want to share the brief history of Panem and how Hunger Games came to be, taken from he book:

Panem is a country that rose up out of the ashes of a place that was once called North America, a shining Capitol ringed by thirteen districts, which brought peace and prosperity to its citizens. Then came the Dark Days, the uprising of the districts against the Capitol.

Twelve were defeated, the thirteenth obliterated. The Treaty of Treason gave us the new laws to guarantee peace and, as our yearly reminder that the Dark Days must never be repeated, it gave us the Hunger Games.

The rules of the Hunger Games are simple. In punishment for the uprising, each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and one boy, called tributes, to participate. The twenty-four tributes will be imprisoned in a vast outdoor arena that could hold anything from a burning desert to a frozen wasteland.

Over a period of several weeks, the competitors must fight to the death. The last tribute standing wins. Taking the kids from the districts, forcing them to kill one another while the others watch — this is the Capitol’s way of reminding district people how totally they are at the mercy of Capitol. How little chance they would stand of surviving another rebellion.

But how could he ignore this girl when every fiber in him was twitching to strain her to him? How could he ignore her when the soft fragrance of her wildly curling hair was constantly in his nostrils, the memory of her slim thighs tightening around his waist constantly in his mind? And he didn’t think it would matter if she were seated in a saddle before him or at a table in a tavern twenty leagues away; Finnula Crais, like a splinter, had worked her way beneath his skin with remarkable speed, and digging her out, he realized, was going to be no small task.

Buy 1 Book & Read It!

It's so nice to go hopping from one blog to another, reading book reviews and comments at the same time, learning more about your fellow bookworm. Because of bloghopping, I happened to stumble upon this wonderful challenge called: Buy One Book and READ IT, hosted by My Friend Amy.

The challenge is about going to the bookstore, buying a book and making sure that you READ that book and not let it stay on your shelf untouched. I am guilty as charged. I occasionally go on a book binge twice a month, buy at least 3 books and when I get home, I'm having a hard time deciding which one to read first, so most of my other books are stuck on the bookends. So i'll gladly join My Friend Amy's challenge to challenge myself too!

And yes, i'll be taking the Level 2 Challenge!
Here are the information you need to know and follow if you like to join:

Start Date: January 1st, 2011
End Date: December 31st, 2011

There are two levels to this challenge:
1) Buy One Book and Read It.
This level is good for people who don't read often but think that would like to read more. It's also good for people who don't buy books. If you don't read much or don't buy many books, this is your level.
2) Level Two--Buy one book and read it every month
You don't have to buy a book in January and read it in January, but you must buy 12 books that you also go on to read during the year. This level is ideal for book bloggers notorious for the buying part, but not so much the reading part.

Rules
1) The book you read must be for pleasure. It cannot be a book you are reading to your children, for work, for research. This is all about fun.
2) The book(s) can be print or electronic. Unless you are unable to read print, audiobooks don't count towards this challenge.
3) Make sure to add your links to the Mister Linky that will go up by January 1st.

Please spread the word! The whole idea of this challenge is to spread the love of reading in manageable bite-sized pieces.

TT: Heist Society

But that wasn't why she smiled when the young man removed his sunglasses, leaned across the sleek glass counter, and said, "Ciao."
The woman felt as if every muscle in her body were starting to melt. "I was wondering if you could help me."
